Someone’s got to do it. Someone’s got to make a little bit of order in the chaos so everyone else can have fun. Humboldt County’s Kinetic Grand Championship is all about fun, it’s written into the rules. And for 46 years this three day, 42 mile, all-terrain art race has run on the backs of some of the most ferociously dedicated volunteers in the festival world.

They pick up trash, they direct traffic, they reunite lost children with their corresponding adults, and they fix things that are broken. The ones that have proven their metal on the Kinetic race course pick up the coveted title of “Ground Pounder.”

Libby Monstarr is the proud mother hen who collects their cult like devotion and near-psychotic work ethic and channels it into functional festival fun for a crowd of many thousands.

In this episode, Monstarr tries to explain what keeps her crew coming back year after year to work as hard as they play, expecting little more than a tee shirt and a hug in return.

You can see the Ground Pounders in action all over Humboldt County, every Memorial Day Weekend. You can also see a pretty cool festival with some mindblowing art and engineering and great feats of athleticism. For more information, check out kineticgrandchampionship.com.
