January 28, 2013 Host Amy Jester Speaks with Lyn Risling and Brittany Brittain about River as Home, the First All Native American Show at the Morris Graves Museum of Art

river_as_home_flyer_v1This week’s guests are artists Lyn Risling and Brittany Brittain. Both women have helped to organize River as Home, an exhibition featured at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka, California from January 30-March 24. Lyn Risling is an accomplished local artist, active in the renewal of tribal ceremonies and traditions. Brittany Brittain is an up and coming next gen artist that studied museum and gallery practices at Humboldt State.

This is the first time in the history of the museum where all Native artists will be featured throughout the space. River as Home focuses on the integral role of the Klamath River and surrounding river systems in the lives, culture, art, health, faith, family, and spirituality of indigenous people of the North Coast. Traditional and contemporary artists from the Wiyot, Karuk, Yurok, Tsenungwe, Hoopa, and Tolowa cultures are participating in the show. Bob Benson, the show’s curator, described River as Home as a representation of the “visual pulse of Native artists from the Klamath River and surrounding systems,” and that it is a “comprehensive look at the spiritual and physical place through the world view of this area’s original peoples.”

We discuss Lyn and Brittany’s experiences in organizing the show, the merging of contemporary and traditional art, cross generational artistic collaboration, and both women’s perspectives on what it means to host a collection of art based on the Klamath River.
