January 14, 2013: Host Amy Jester Talks with Film Maker Dorothy Fadiman About Her Documentary Series on Reproductive Rights in America

Dorothy FadimanThis year marks the 40th Anniversary of Roe v Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationwide. To explore the complexity of abortion rights in the United States, this week we interview Emmy award winning, Oscar nominated film maker Dorothy Fadiman.

Through her production company, Concentric Media, Ms. Fadiman created the documentary film series From the Back Alleys to the Supreme Court, which captures the complicated story of abortion in the United States. The four-film series includes:

Motherhood by Choice, Not Chance
When Abortion Was Illegal: Untold Stories
From Danger to Dignity: The Fight for Safe Abortion
The Fragile Promise of Choice: Abortion in the US

Her films tell a rich and complicated story through use of archival footage, interviews with men and women about their experiences with abortion, and conversations with Interviews for Abortion Rights Seriesreproductive and abortion rights activists, including members of JANE, The Clergy Counseling Group, the Society for Humane Abortion, and doctors and nurses that have put their lives on the line to protect women’s access to safe abortion services.

Dorothy Fadiman has been producing social change media since 1976 and her production company, Concentric Media, has been in business for over 30 years. Ms. Fadiman won the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s gold medal, and she is also an accomplished writer, having published Producing with Passion, a book that follows her career and offers specific suggestions for independent filmmakers to support them in finding their unique voices through filmmaking.
