November 5, 2012 Host Amy Jester Speaks with Kelly Hardy of Children Now about the Affordable Care Act and it’s Implications for Children and Families in California

Over 4.5 million low-income California children are insured through Medi-Cal and the Healthy Families Program. The Affordable Care Act will provide increased coverage and access to care for hundreds of thousands of additional youth in the state. California has already begun to implement some of those changes to our healthcare system, for example 1.6 million children are receiving expanded coverage of preventive services and Young adults can now stay insured under their parents employer provided coverage until they turn 26. Additionally, California law now provides for specific enrollment opportunities for over 600,000 children with pre-existing conditions. But the state has still got a lot of work to do to prepare for full implementation of healthcare reform.

In this special pre-election edition of Through the Eyes of Women, Amy Jester discusses healthcare reform with Kelly Hardy, Director of Health Policy at Children Now, a leading, nonpartisan, multi-issue research, policy development, and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting children’s health and education in California.
