Did you know that there are 1, 138 federal benefits and rights afforded to straight married couples that are denied to same-sex married couples; even if their marriage is legally recognized in their state of residence?  I didn’t know that until I spoke with Jane Wishon of Marriage Equality USA.

Jane Wishon joined the Marriage Equality movement in June of 2008.  Prior to that she had advocated for Gay and Lesbian rights for 10 years in the Presbyterian Church, but in her mind, “the dictionary definition of marriage was man/woman” (LABT/POV May 28, 2011  She thought same-sex marriage should have another name until her husband of 30 years gently pointed out that ‘separate but equal’ is never equal.  So she got involved in the No on Proposition 8 campaign and is now a prominent public figure and a national board member of Marriage Equality USA.

Today Jane speaks eloquently, passionately and frequently on behalf of marriage equality.  She is CA Los Angeles County Chapter leader for Marriage Equality USA, a volunteer Case Manger for AIDS project LA, and works with the Trevor Project both in LA schools and online.

If you fully support marriage equality Jane will inform and inspire you.  If you are a fence sitter or an opponent of same-sex marriage Jane’s educated perspective and reasoned, passionate discourse may persuade you to join her in the fight for marriage equality.

Remember to tune in to KHSU 90.5 on Monday July 2, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. for the second half of the conversation.
