April 30, 2012 Host Kathy Marshall speaks with Thea Gast, Pam Brown and JoAnn Schuch about Arcata Elder Village

In August of 2009, in response to an article in the North Coast Journal about Humboldt County’s Skilled Nursing Facilities, five women came together to talk about the future of elder care in Humboldt County, particularly in Arcata;  their futures, their care, their community, their concerns and their visions.

Today the three remaining members, Thea Gast, Pam Brown and JoAnn Schuch, talk about what they have learned in the last 2 1/2 years.  Their journey has included discussions with community leaders in the private and public sectors, as well with government representatives and other interested individuals.

Just as it takes a community to raise a child, it also takes a community to care for elders.  Pam Brown notes that issues such as transportation, access to health care and sustainability are not only elder care issues, but community issues that have been very much at the forefront of Arcata city government discussions.

Listen as they discuss their insights and the possibilities they see for creatively addressing the needs of elders now and in the future.
