April 23: Renowned Nonprofit Strategist Jan Masaoka Speaks with Host Amy Jester on the State-wide Nonprofit Sector

Nonprofits play significant roles in communities across California, and are major contributors to the state economy.  Image114,000 California nonprofits hold over $230 trillion dollars in assets and are responsible for more than $125 trillion dollars in revenue on an annual basis. Jan Masaoka, new Executive Director of the California Association of Nonprofits, discusses changes in the nonprofit sector as organizations adjust to the new normal in social, economic and political climates accross the state.

Jan Masaoka is a leading writer and thinker on nonprofit organizations with particular emphasis on boards of directors, business planning, and the role of nonprofits in society. Her books include:

  • All Hands on Board: The Board of Directors in All-Volunteer Organizations (BoardSource)
  • Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability, with Jeanne Bell and Steve Zimmerman (Jossey Bass, 2010)

Jan also founded and managed Blue Avocado magazine, to which 63,000 people have subscribed online, and which has been described as the second-best read publication in the nonprofit sector.

Prior to Blue Avocado, she served 14 years as executive director of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, a national consulting and training firm for nonprofits based in San Francisco. In that position she was named Nonprofit Executive of the Year by Nonprofit Times in 2003.
